What is Safe Space Training?

The general training is approximately 4 hours long, and is divided into four primary sections. In the training, you will learn:

  • Basic LGBTQ+ terminology & ways to make your language more inclusive
  • Identify biases and stereotypes
  • Increased awareness of LGBTQ+ challenges & the coming out process
  • Ways that you can be a better ally to LGBTQ+ students on your campus

We will also work together on a number of activities in order to gain a better understanding of LGBTQ+ identities and experiences. These activities are going to be reflective, small group, and large group discussions. We will take a break about halfway through.

  • To advocate, provide education, and build community on LGBTQ+ issues.
  • To identify individuals who are empathetic and informed about queer issues and help them on their path toward allyship.
  • To create visible support for the LGBTQ+ community on campus.
  • To demonstrate best practices for all community members, including non-allies, for working with LGBTQ+ individuals on a professional level.

Safe Space Mission:

The goal of the Safe Space Campaign is to identify and educate individuals who will affirm and support all people regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. People displaying the Safe Space symbol are committed to combating hatred and discrimination through assistance and support.
